Train and Equip! (Upper Deck Battledome TCG Update)

Posted on March 28th, 2024 @ 9:00am by Joe.

In this week's preview of the upcoming Neopets Battledome TCG, Upper Deck shows off Codestones, which allow you to train your pet, and Equipment, which when attached to a Neopet of the proper level, provides stat bonuses and abilities!

Just like in Neopia, Codestones in Neopets Battledome Trading Card Game are used to train your Neopets by increasing your Neopet’s stat values and their level allowing you to play certain cards. This will make a little more sense in the Equipment section below! In the meantime, here is some more insight into how Codestones work.

Today we are showing you 3 of the 9 total Codestones. These are Eo, Har, and Zei (the same ones you can find in Neopia!). You will notice on the bottom of each card is a different +1 stat modifier. This means that this Codestone provides a boost to that stat, giving your Neopet a little more edge in battle! Eo gives +1 Attack, Har gives +1 Defence, and Zei gives +1 Agility.

In addition to a stat boost, Codestones also determine your Neopets level. This is important for playing cards and is simply determined by how many Codestones you have attached to your Neopet. Each turn you may attach a Codestone from your Inventory (the cards in your hand) to your Neopet. Then, the number of Codestones it has attached determines its level: 1 Codestone = Level 1, 2 Codestones = Level 2, etc. Let’s see why your Neopet’s level matters with some Equipment cards.

Upper Deck has also provided us these exclusive previews of three additional Codestones!

In Neopia, training and preparing for the Battledome is no easy feat. It takes time to level up your Neopet and find well-crafted equipment to give your fighter their best chances at victory. We have approached Neopets Battledome Trading Card Game with the same technique and are excited to show you some of the awesome Equipment you’ll find to power up your Neopet. Here are Expert Bow and Tower Shield.

Let’s take a closer look at how to play these cards and what they do. The first thing we want to highlight is the card’s “level requirement.” This refers to the number in the top left of the cards: 3 for Expert Bow and 4 for Tower Shield. This means that your Neopet must have a level equal to or greater than that number to play it (remember, this is dictated by the number of Codestones it has attached). So, the more your Neopet trains with Codestones, the stronger the Equipment they are capable of yielding!

The next, and most important part of the card is its ability. This is shown in the text box towards the bottom of the card and typically contains an ongoing effect that changes the way your Neopet battles! In this case, the Expert Bow gives your Neopet an additional 1 Attack and an additional 1 Agility, while the Tower Shield grants an additional 3 Defence. While there are a lot of various equipment cards that give a passive boost to your Neopets stats, there are many that have unique and more complex abilities. For example, here are Jhudora’s Cursed Sword and Blade of the Battle Faerie.

You will notice that these unique equipment cards have more complex effects and refer to certain times that these abilities will trigger. These will synergize with specific mechanics of other cards and create cool combos to build your deck around! As we continue to preview more of the Neopets Battledome Trading Card Game, you will find that other cards like Faeries and Legends will support these archetypes to play a significant role in your deck’s goal.

Paint your Neopets! (Upper Deck TCG Update)

Posted on March 20th, 2024 @ 9:00am by Joe.

This week's Upper Deck Neopets TCG update sees the introduction of Paint Brushes and Painted Pets!

Welcome to the Rainbow Pool! We know you Neopians are familiar with this wonderful place, so we made sure to bring it directly to you in Neopets Battledome Trading Card Game. In this first set, Defenders of Neopia, you will find five different Paint Brushes: Fire, Ghost, Faerie, Starry, and Rainbow. These Paint Brushes of course give your Neopets cool and unique new looks, but that’s not all! Each paint brush also changes your Neopets stats or adds new abilities as well. You might see a stat increase or even a cool new effect that changes the tides in battle. We’ll bring back last week’s Neopets to show you how each of them improves under their new version!
Fan the flames of Neopia with the Fire Paint Brush! You will find 11 different Neopets in Defenders of Neopia with a fire painted version (Uni is exclusive to the Fire Uni Starter Deck). And who better yield its fiery power than Shoyru. Notice that Fire Shoyru has higher Attack, Agility, and Hit Points after being painted!

For all the spooky enjoyers, we knew this next one would be a great include in Defenders of Neopia. You’ll find 10 of the sets Neopets in this Ghost form. Here’s the Ghost Paint Brush and a beautifully mysterious Ghost Lupe with improved Defence, a bump in Hit Points, and even a sweet new ability!

Turn your pet into a high-flying faerie with this Neopian favorite Paint Brush! There will be faerie versions of 10 of the Neopets found in the Defenders of Neopia set. This bright and fun look is perfect for Kacheek and boosts it up with some more Agility, more Hit Points, and a cool new ability!

Lasso down the stars and paint your pet with this glistening Paint Brush! You will find starry versions of 11 of the species in this set (Acara is exclusive for the Starry Acara Starter Deck). You might catch a glint of this Jubjub rolling down a hill with some extra Defence and Agility.

Turns out, the treasure at the end of the rainbow was always beautifully painted Neopets! Each of the 20 species can be found in a Rainbow version. Here is what Aisha looks like with this colorful upgrade, combining the bonus from Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green Neopets all in one! Note the Rainbow Neopets will be filled with a textured foil and have an amazing shine to them.

Neopets Revealed! (Upper Deck TCG Update)

Posted on March 14th, 2024 @ 9:00am by Joe.

Upper Deck has shared another preview of the upcoming Neopets TCG.  This time focusing on base coloured Neopets.

Just like in Neopia, they can be found in 4 different base colors: Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green. These colors are not just for aesthetics, but they serve an important role mechanically in game. Be sure to read all the way through to learn why their colors matter and get a peek at the exciting redeemable Grundo Warehouse Prizes!

Neopets Battledome Trading Card Game is a main character game, which means at the start of each round of play, you will choose one of your Neopets to fight for you in battle! They will help you towards victory alongside the aid of Faeries, Equipment, Legends, Potions, Food, Paint Brushes and Codestones. So, choosing the right Neopet each round is crucial to becoming the Champion of the Battledome!

This little reckless ball of energy is always looking for new ways to excite, using their odd shape to their advantage. The big eyes and feet make Jubjubs a fun and cute species to befriend and they are happy to oblige! You can find these different base colors of Jubjub in Defenders of Neopia:

This joyful and smiley Neopet is one of the land’s oldest species, enjoying their lives in quaint areas with plenty of grass and flowers to roam through. Their calm demeanor and passive attitude make for a friendly Neopet. We know that Kacheek is one of your favorites, so we made sure to include it in the base set! Here are the 4 different base colors of Kacheek you will find:

One of Neopia’s most loyal and loved species is the Lupe. With its fluffy fur and pointy ears, its beautiful wolflike stature is revered throughout Neopia. Lupes can often be found at night intently gazing at the full moon… Here are the 4 base colors of Lupe you will find in Defenders of Neopia.

This draconic Neopet is adorned with long wings and a sturdy tail and loves spending its time flying, taking to the skies whether day or night. You definitely want a Shoyru on your side but be careful of their spicy temperament when they are mistreated (understandably so)! Over many decades now, they have proven to be a Neopian favorite and we honor that in the Battledome Trading Card Game. Here are the 4 different base colors for Shoyru.

You’ll notice that the 4 stats on each Neopet card are also Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green. These colors correspond to their Attack, Defence, Agility, and Hit Points (we will get more into that later when we share more about the rules of the game). These ability values will change based on the Neopet’s color! So, for example, a Red Shoyru will have an increased Attack value while a Yellow Kacheek will have an increased Agility value. A Blue Kacheek has increased Defence, and a Green Kacheek has increased Hit Points. It’s simple and easy to know at first glance what stat boost your Neopet will gain just based on their color!

Also shared was the Grundo Warehouse card. These cards will be packed roughly 1 in every 24 packs (24 packs is one box) and you have a chance of receiving one of six exclusive Battledome themed wearables!

Today is also the last day to enter the sweepstakes to win the Arcade Shoyru Avatar! Enter by signing up for Upper Deck's email newsletter. (only open to those in the US and Canada, with some exclusions.)

Some updates about Upper Deck's upcoming Neopets Trading Cards.

First, they have just posted an update about the upcoming Battledome TCG.

No new information (outside of this cool new logo!) but it's exciting to see they're still pushing full steam ahead for launch.

To recap, this is an all new trading card game (totally different than the original) that features a unique dice based combat system, all new art (over 250 unique cards in the first set!) that features over 20 different Neopets species and many characters from Neopia. These are physical cards, and will be available for purchase in actual retail stores. (be sure to ask your local gaming or comic store to stock them!)

Also a minor update about the Neopets Weekly Series, that launched on Upper Deck e-Pack last year and was paused in order to address concerns of the Neopets community.

Let me first say that Upper Deck has stated that they will keep us informed of when these will launch again, and as of yet have not, so we are a ways off for launch.

These cards are completely separate from the TCG, and are only available for purchase on Upper Deck's e-Pack website, where you are purchasing digital cards. The Neopets series specifically can later be redeemed for physical cards (for a small fee plus S&H.) In updates last year, Upper Deck stated that you would still need to have the entire set (which includes now sold out cards) in your digital account (unredeemed) in order to claim the end of series bonuses.

Ok, now for the actual update.

All cards have received a total overhaul. The card layout has been updated, some pets poses and colours have been changed, and the issues pointed out by the community have been corrected.

Currently if you own digital cards on e-Pack they have been updated to this new art. No word if that is what you will receive when redeeming your cards. (as the original ones are already printed, and folks who redeemed their cards in the last year got the original designs.) Again, I'm sure Upper Deck will update once we are closer to launch, but it's great to see they are moving forward and keeping the community's feedback in mind when doing so.

As always, keep checking back for updates, and you can also check out Upper Deck's socials at:

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Discord, Email Newsletter.
